Here we bring our experience and conversation with parents and students that gives more insight into how this program works. All these examples are from real experiences and we will be more than happy to share contacts for reference if you are considering to enroll.
From the instructor’s desk:
One of the new admissions this summer is an example of the reach and impact of this program:
A new middle school student enrolled in the program to strengthen pre-algebra skills. He was skeptical about the length of our sessions, each session being 2-hour long. He finished the class and went back home and the parent sent us the following feedback: “He didn’t realize he worked for 2 hours, this says a lot”
His sister who came with the mom pick him up from class joined us for SAT math the next day.
As she was learning and practicing SAT math, we had a couple of students learning precalc honors during the same time. So this student had an opportunity to pay attention to precalc while practicing SAT problems and she was instantly interested to learn precalc.
She started attending precalc class the next day scheduling to come once a week. After a couple of classes, she requested that she could come two classes each week so she could be well ahead of the subject before school opens.
We group students learning different math topics together in a single 2-hour session for a purpose. It allows cross-learning as math topics are all inter related and a peripheral understanding or familiarity of a related topic will generate more interest to learn additional concepts. It’s all part of our approach letting students explore as much of math as they could.
We have seen students attending algebra class and as they hear another student dealing with a Geometry challenge problem, raising his/her hand to answer the challenge and then request “can I learn half the time Algebra and remaining half geometry?”
Similarly, we sometimes combine precalc and Calculus students, so precalc students gets a high level understanding about what they will learn soon in Calculus Honors or AP Calculus. It also helps them to understand relevant concepts in precalc that promote calculus learning and focus on them right away for immediate benefit as well as positioning them for long term math learning goals. For the calculus students they get an opportunity to learn some of the precalc topics they wish they did learn more thoroughly in the previous course because some of its are coming back to them in calculus.
It’s about opportunity beyond grades or boundaries, because it’s an ocean of concepts.
